It's time to give up my services for [livejournal.com profile] help_japan. I am offering to make a fan vid. Details and bidding can be found here. Every little bit helps.

If you can't afford to bid, how about offering up your talents?
cabenson: (Default)
Wow, Japan! That's really about all I can say because I am dumbfounded. Yesterday morning there was a light snowfall coating everything, and in the early morning's dawn, all I could do was marvel at the simple beauty of nature. Now I sit in awe of its destructive powers.

Trying to think if anything worth mentioning happened this week, but to be honest, it was just a week of work, meds, stretching and sleep. My upper back is slightly better, but I realized that I still need help, so I started looking around town for a therapeutic massage. The only type of massage I have ever had is therapeutic/pressure point for my back, and done by my physical therapist of the moment. I have always been a little freaked out about strangers touching me, so I resisted any offers for a relaxing type of massage. And the wife , bless her heart, simply doesn't have the strength in her wee pygmy hands to break up that muscle tension.

So I am currently researching for massage therapists and may make it a weekly thing. I have been told on more than one occasion that I bring my job home in my neck and shoulders.

Other news, hmmm...

My beloved OSU Buckeyes have been doused with the stain that is SCANDAL!!!!! Oh Senator (Coach Tressel for the uneducated), you need to use a little better judgment. And that means staying away from trashy scandal-infested lawyers, former players or not! I read the emails, and I can see where he may have misinterpreted the words "confidential investigation", but YOU KNOW BETTER!!!!! I hope he comes out of this with his career and our program intact. He truly is beloved in Columbus, not just for his work on the field, but his work in the community as well.

Mrs. CB is heading of to play rehearsal and I am thinking of watching the 1st season of "Arrested Development". My co-worker and I swapped series for the weekend. I gave her "Archer"...lol. Love that damn show.

Wondering if I should open up that bottle of Prosecco (with cranberry juice, YUM!!) or wait til tomorrow. Decisions, decisions....

So LJ has games like FB now? Hmmm...

So Tues am while heading into the shower, I had an issue with my upper back. Those that know me know that I have degenerative disc disease and that I have had multiple surgeries/procedures on my lower back. The past couple years, I have been experiencing greater discomfort with my upper/middle back. Tuesday morning, it felt like someone had hit me right between the shoulder blades with a sledgehammer.

I went to work because of a Very Important Meeting I needed to attend but left when the meeting concluded. Wed I could not turn to drive, so I stayed home. Thurs I made it to work but was racked with spasms all day. Thank goodness it was a slow day. I have muscle relaxers, but because my job is critical to patient care, I won't take them while working, even if the doc says to. I just can't. It is probably the ONLY work ethic I have, but the only thing I will take for pain/spasms while handling patient reults is a couple advil.

Finally got into doc yesterday and at that point it was mostly some spasms and little pain. Til she actually touched my back and left ribcage. Holy Shit!! I actually broke out in a sweat. No wonder my blood pressure was high. The body knows when we are in pain even when we don't recognize it. She is such a good doc tho. She wanted to make sure it wasn't actually a heart attack (do YOU know the signs/symptoms of a heart attack in women? You should!!)or pleurisy. Once we were assured it was muscular, she asked if I wanted a referral to a plastic surgery cause, and I quote, "Your boobs are a size ZZZZ and they need to go!"

I am so ready for this! My girls went from a perfectly manageable 38C to a 46DDD in 5 years. Both my mother and my sister have had the same issue and they each had successful reductions. So I am gonna start researching plastic surgeons and hope to have my 38C's back sometime this summer. It will be SO nice to fit in my clothes again. Cause really, more than a handful is too much!

I have been getting my social on. For those that don't know, I am a homebody. Especially in the winter. I am much more comfortable spending time off at home with the wife and boys than going out or anything.I'd rather watch sporting events on my big screen TV with my own bathroom than attend in person. I blame it on my back, but the truth is, I think I am just a hermit. And I hate to wear pants that don't have a drawstring. And a bra.

But, I am getting better!

Friday night I took the wife to Vino Vino for dinner (food pr0n to come!) before we met friends to see an OSU production of the play "Spring Awakening". What a depressing play! I think that MAYBE the musical MIGHT have been more enjoyable, but I highly doubt it. But we did enjoy hanging out with our buds and had we not all been so exhausted, may have engaged in post-production drinks and debate.

Yesterday I returned to hermitville when the wife went to visit her sister. I did watch all 6 eps of the Spartacus prequel, "Gods of the Arena. Starz really has a grasp on these period pieces. The storytelling has you on the edge of your seat and the hotness that is Lucy Lawless and Jaime Murray...well, you'll have to see for yourself.

I also watched the first ep sneak peek of Starz "Camelot". It was a little slow, but then, so was Sparty. Looking forward to seeing that series when it begins in April.

It was rather cool here yesterday and I could not get warm. More likely a result of my thyroid than the weather, but I felt that I needed to make brownies in order to warm up again. Dark chocolate brownies, part of the batch with whole Oreos immersed...yum!

Now I am waiting for Mrs CB to get home. She should get here just as the OSU women start their last game, which I will watch on my big screen TV with my own bathroom around the corner. With pajama pants on. And no bra. Enjoy that mental image.

What a week it has been!

As I mentioned in my last post, I created my first video presentation for professional use. AND! I got paid for it. I was told there will be more of these projects in the future and I was also asked to be on the committee to re-design our company website. For the first time in several years, I have a positive attitude about going to work. Now I just keep hoping they decide to create a position for this creative work instead of tacking it onto/sharing with my current job-that wouldn't be fair to me, and it really wouldn't be fair to the co-workers who depend on me to do my share.

I took my cousin's OSU freshman out to our fave place to eat, Cap City Diner. She is from a very small country town about an hour south of Columbus and after living with the university's meal plan for six months, she was ready for some "real" food. Now she says she can never eat the dorm's "meatloaf" again because she had CCD's version and "nothing can compare."

During this meal, I wore a size smaller jeans-first time I have done that in 2 years. Thank you Influenza B!!!

And this week we lost the first family member of our generation. When I got the call, I feared we had lost an uncle known for his serious heart issues. I was gutted to hear that our cousin, aged 51, had died. So today, I will be gathering with cousins, many of them for the first time in years, to celebrate the life of my cousin, Beth Ann Haller Horvath. I think the thing that upsets me so much about this is that this gathering is just the first.

A positive work-related post! I don't think I've had one of those since I quit HellLab.

My manager (my boss's boss)is creating a vision forum for our department (laboratory with damn near 300 workers). Part of this forum is a video presentation that discusses one of our key focuses for the year. The sales manager created the vid and we were asked to be the "beta" group and offer suggestions.

It was not good. Really, not good at all. Colored text in a cursive font, too many fancy transitions, no continuity, and most importantly, it did not seem to be in line with the theme of the forum. The music was great, I'll give him that much, but the rest...no.

So, my manager, knowing that I like to play around with making vids in my free time, asked me to take a look at it and see what I could do. I thought about it all weekend, and did a little research. Yesterday I put together a stream-lined, much more professional looking vid with the same music, but a better grasp of what she is trying to get across. I was nervous all night about showing it to her, because I have never shown anyone at work my vids. And I have NEVER done anything for a professional organization, except maybe that pretentious twats anonymous program that [livejournal.com profile] theholyinnocent tried to complete. We almost didn't get out of that one alive.

She loved it! The marketing supervisor loved it! And after changing out a few pics, I will have created my first professional piece. And I am getting paid for the hours I worked on it as well! Manager said that there will probably be more vids for additional forums as well as creating instruction vids for our website. AND she wants my boss to free up some of my time to sit on the committee re-designing our website. I can only hope that this leads to the creation of another marketing job and I can get away from the phones.

I guess all that femslashy vid making wasn't a waste after all :)

I do not seem to be doing very well with that NY resolution to post more. I guess I wish I had more fandomy stuff to post, but I am not so enamored with any show/pairing at this time. Maybe you all could shove some suggestions my way?

Things in Central Ohio are pretty good. Finally seeing the sun and it is warmer, so hopefully that ugly snow in our yard will melt and we'll see no more this year. Knock on wood I have not fallen on any ice. Slid a little, but no earthquake-registering tumbles.

Mr Artemis seems to have 9 million lives! He is fully recovered from the surgery as well as the pneumonia and pancreatitis. He is BOUNCY people!!! He has one more re-check next week as part of the clinical trial he is in. As luck would have it, Mrs CB is off so we are gonna go to lunch while we wait for his scans and stuff.

The other cats are also wonderful, in their own special way. Asher, our socially disabled cat recently jumped up on the bed and squatted like he was gonna poop. Turns out, he couldn't. Major kitty constipation and I guess that was his way of bringing it to my attention. He is now getting 2x daily doses of lactulose(poo softener) which looks like blood from the Wicked Witch of the West. He takes it better than I thought and is feeling a little better. Yesterday, he offered up a pre-Valentines Day, almost heart shaped nugget for me. My sweet boys, they love me so...

We changed their food to a vet script formula ($$$) that should help all of their digestive systems as well as help a certain fat bastard lose some weight. Most importantly, it will help colitis kitty (Smokey) heal and keep Artie from getting blockages. Only Bruin seems to be without issue, but he is pure evil so I think we'll just continue dealing with that. His favorite toy died on Friday and one would think the catapocalypse was upon us. I was able to order a new one on-line and he should have it tomorrow, along with some major kitty weed toys. I know, I spoil them.

Last night I made an early Valentine's Day dinner for my lovely [livejournal.com profile] stargazer1960. She wanted steaks, so we had NY Strip steaks, fresh green beans sauteed with fire-roasted red pepper and BACONS!!!, and pinot noir mushrooms. Some delicious baklava for dessert. I also picked up some locally made ice cream and sorbet: Poached Pear Riesling and "Influenza" Sorbet (has citrus, honey, whiskey and cayenne pepper...good for curing what ails ya even if you aren't sick!) for the wife and some Roxbury Road for me (choc ice cream, homeade marshmallow, brown sugar caramel sauce and smoked almonds.)I can only have a little of that at time because of the chocolate allergy thing, but DAMN!! is it good. Salty Caramel for me as well. Like eating a fire-roasted marshmallow.

For today's dinner, we are having spaghetti and my homemade meatballs. I made them yesterday and they have been soaking up sauce all night. Gonna put them on to simmer soon...the house will smell delicious!!!

Finally, I was asked by my manager to use my video editing skills to work on a short vid for a vision forum she is presenting. Not so sure if I have "skills" vs. dumb luck, but I'll give it a try, especially since it is using photos instead of video. Should keep me out of trouble for the rest of the day...

Stay warm (cool, depending on your geographical location) and stay safe!!

And Happy early Valentine's Day!!!!!

Ah, cold and flu season, you have officially arrived and yes, kicked my ass. Woke up yesterday with a nasty head cold-you know, the kind that is so bad you can't read, sleep, watch tv or anything cause the congestion is so severe and painful. Repeating a lazy day today. Hopefully, my friend Mucinex-D will help.

Finally got the holiday decorations down and our family pics back up. Need to update the sister's kids-oldest nephew is almost 20 now and the pic I have of him is aged 11. And very grateful that we didn't need to relegate Artie's pic to the "memorial" wall. He has made an absolutely stunning recovery. We have one more week of meds for him and then he should be done. We are giving him malt every day to help with the hairball issues. I really don't want to get him groomed: cats just don't take that as well as dogs do.

Didn't get the job I was hoping for. Rather bummed about it because it was supposedly "very close" between me and a co-worker. She got it because she is already familiar with a certain computer program and I am not. What really gets me is that I was planning to make this job a career-she is only planning to do it for a year or so to "get experience that will make her marketable". Whatever. The job hunt resumes. I'll keep looking till I find something I actually enjoy doing.

Nothing much else going on here. Working on a vid for my buddy Few, and thinking about whether I can actually pull off Ralst's Epic Proportion challenge this year. Now that I have Mondays off, maybe I can. I have been trying to write My Alex Cabot returns fic for about five years now.

Digging watching Netflix and YouTube on my big screen thanks to a wireless Blu Ray DVD player I got with all my Christmas $$$. I think Mrs. CB was surprised yesterday when we were going through all the titles we could watch instantly. And watching "Inception" in Blu Ray? AWESOME!!!!!

Re-reading Patricia D Cornwell's first Scarpetta book, "Postmortem". Her early works were SO much better than the last few years. I enjoyed the last three books she wrote in the series, but none of them hold a candle to the earlier books. In fact, I am gonna sign off here and go snuggle with Artie and read some more.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you wonderful flisters!

Mrs CB and I celebrated last night with a lovely dinner (spaghetti), some snuggly cats (including a much better Artie), a fun action flick (Knight and Day) and the sweetest snowfall ever.

I am working today and tomorrow so my family visits will be delayed. But for now, I am sitting at my desk, listening to David Gray and thinking about eating some cookies.

May you all have a peacful holiday!!

Cat Tales

Artie is back in the kitty hospital. I brought him home yesterday afternoon, but he never seemed quite right. No appetite, wouldn't take water, glazed eyes. This morning it was worse, so Mrs CB bundled him up and they re-admitted him. Looks like aspiration pneumonia as well as post-surgical (or possibly pre-surgical) pancreatitis. He is in an oxygen tent and getting antibiotics, but it is still touch and go. They truly thought they were gonna lose him this afternoon, but he came around.

Compounding the pneumonia/pancreatitis is that the fluids they gave him during this surgery weren't as well balanced as the first surgery (because of these un-manifested illnesses) so he is having problems with possible fluid in his heart again...we just weaned him off his diuretic this spring. Tomorrow they'll do an abdominal ultrasound to confirm pancreatitis. He will probably be there til Thurs, so I'm taking Fri off to babysit him. Thank goodness Mrs CB starts break next week. And thanks to all of you who have been keeping him, and us, in your thoughts and prayers. I'm going up to see him after work tomorrow.

Now a funny cat tale. In preparing for Artie's return, I had to move furniture in the bedroom. I am now in "winter mode"(headboard against interior wall vs exterior window), and because Artie can't jump, I had to take the bed and box springs off the frame. Having the bed 12" lower makes all the cats quite happy. Having no headboard makes Smokey extremeley happy. See, Smokey has this wonderful game he likes to play when it gets dark and the bed is against a wall opposite a window. We call it "Chasing Cars". The cars drive past and the lights shine through the rare slit in the blinds and he "chases" it against the wall. Sometimes this means he jumps hard against the wall, or jumps on our heads. We used to have a framed Wonder Woman poster hanging over the bed, but one time too many did we fear for WW joining us in bed, and not in a good way. Tonight he took out my alarm clock. But he sure was happy doing it.

Our little guy, Artie got sick again this weekend. We took him to MedVet Sat night and early indications showed a possible case of pancreatitis. He was in so much pain. His Xrays were suspect, but they thought it may be a result of his surgery 3 months ago. Uh, no.

Sun morning they called to tell us it was yet another intestinal blockage and he needed surgery. Luckily this time they didn't have to make a GI incision-they were able to manually manipulate it into the colon. He did develop some pulmonary edema, and with his heart condition thy really watched him post-op.

This morning they say he is resting comfortably and they were gonna try offering him food. He is also being very affectionate-damn whore. I am just waiting for the call that says I can come get him. He may have to stay another night. Either way, Mrs. CB is taking a day off to be with him tomorrow. We are really lucky to have a very modern, high-tech emergency care place to take our babies, but that care is costly. These boys are melting the credit cards.

So now we have to deal with these hairballs. We have added hairball control food, we give him kittymalt several times a week. Kitty grass is an option, it would help all the cats. I think we may need to start having him groomed.I know a few of you get "Lion Cuts" for your longer-haired cats? Does this help?

BTW, who got snow and how much? 4-5" here and it is freaking freeing.

I have a raging cold. Anyone else suffering out there? I'm gonna hit it with some alcohol this afternoon. Alcohol, football, and snuggly kitties whether they feelin like snuggling or not.

So what's new? I had the opportunity to apply for a new position at work. Supervisory specialist in a department where I had tons of experience when I worked at The Hell Lab. Decided that I didn't want to give up my evenings and nights tho, so I passed. Glad I did. Last January, after blowing another disc in my back, I decided to go part time. My boss suggested shorter days because she wanted me there every day, but leaving early hasn't been beneficial to the department. Working five days a week hasn't been beneficial to me. So, we agreed on a change and starting in 2 weeks, I go back to 4 days a week, 8 hrs a day. Mondays are now my favorite day cause I don't have to go in to work!!! I'm really happy about this-no change in money cause I am working the same hours. My boss even thought I'd enjoy the extra day to "do that video stuff you like". So after 4.5 years, I may finally gain some time to write and vid again.

And...I got the week between Christmas and New Years off. I have to work Christmas but now that I am officially part time, I get double time. I also volunteered to work the day after so my work wife could have her fiest Xmas weekend off in 3 years. But from 3:00pm Dec 26 through 7:00 am Jan 3, I will be on vacation!!!! What to do, what to do!!!! I wish we could go to NYC....

Okay, off to grab a shower, eat some cold medicine then work on some vids until football starts.

Happy Halloween, everyone!!! I'm sitting here on a gorgeous Halloween Sunday morning watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show -a-thon while Mrs CB is at church praying for my soul.

Had a blast at our friends' annual Halloween party last night. Always a special time for us, because that is where we met, 11 years ago. As a result, we always try to do some fun coupley costume thing, ususally TV or movie, and last night was no exception. I am trying to remember all of the couples we have gone as for the paast 10 years (in no particular order):

1. Columbus cop and OSU student rioter
2. Mulder and Scully
3. Clarice Starling and Hannibal Lecter
4. Mary Kathering Gallagher and Sr. Mary Libida
5. Jo and Blair from The Facts of Life
6. Edina and Patsy from Ab Fab
7. Callie and Erica
8. Stewie and Lois
9. Sue Sylvester and Kurt from GLEE

and finally....

Sitting here at work, bored out of my mind. I wouldn't mind working the weekends if there was actually enough WORK for more than one person to do. I suppose that will be brought up again this week-Management did not get good results for the Employee Satisfaction Survey we participated in a few months ago. Maybe if they hadn't badgered us to complete the damn thing. Now they are asking for suggestions on how we can work better as a team...uh, get rid of the problem employees on each shift that suck the good and light out of the world?

So, how are all of you? Have you gotten your flu shots yet? Do it soon! I have spent the past week recovering from a mini vaca...good times, yo! Starting to get the house ready for winter-Mrs CB is already working on the gardens. Gonna need to get my Halloween stuff out next weekend. Have yet to decide on a costume. I thought Carol Anne and the medium lady, Tangina from Poltergeist would be fun. Mrs CB is still contemplating. I still refuse to be the Harry Potter to her Snape!!!!!

Been hanging with the kitties lately. There is nothing more wonderful than a cool day and a snuggly cat. Bruin has been pissier than normal, probably because I was gone for 2 whole days. Artie has rebounded beautifully from his hairballed intestine. And I am ever so grateful as he is such a snuggler. And a little shit. The Twins continue to be awesome- Smokey has been hitting the litterbox more than he was, exception being 10:50 last night. I got crapped on, and not just by my Buckeyes. Asher continues to be the best alarm clock ever. There is a price to pay tho-I have to comb him every morning when I get out of the shower. He stands on the toilet (lid down, of course) and puts his front paws in the top of the tank. Then he bitches till I comb him. And I do. I'm whipped. And finally, Greyson, aka Fat Bastard. He has been sleeping with me lately, probably so I can protect his whiney ass from the other cats. Friday night, I accidentally kicked him off the bed. He just climbed back up the kitty stairs and went back to sleep. Yes, we have kitty stairs-the beds are high and the cat, he is low. And slow. And has bad hips.

TV season is notsobad this year. We have a date every Tuesday night to watch GLEE, and in January, V will be back. Trying to stay with the event, but I don't know. BONES and BIG BANG THEORY keep us occupied on Thursday as does THE MIDDLE and MODERN FAMILY on Wed. I happened upon an ep of L&O:UK yesterday on BBCA. Not bad.

With my 3-day weekend next week, I am gonna see if I have enough stuff organized to attempt NaNoWriMo. If not, I'll start working on THAT story for EP 2011. I do have 2 vids to work on as well...

Anyway, just wanted to check in. Hope you are all well.

Can I just say "DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!? Almost eases the pain over not being able to have chocolate anymore...The ice cream has a hint of cinnamon to it and the cookie chunks are wonderful. I like to add some Mrs. Richfields Butterscotch Caramel. Yum!

A recuperating Artie in his special little area of the bedroom. Yes, that is a kitty flip-out couch. No, he isn't using it. He is insisting on being/near the open windows. Two weeks of limited activity...gonna be tough for this one. We all thank you for your good thoughts and prayers.

Been watching the Star Wars a-thon on Spike the past couple days. Forgot what a whiny bitch Luke was.

I'm making nice roast in the crock. Gotta go start the taters soon. What are you having?

Finally getting a chance to relax over this long weekend. For those that haven't heard via Mrs CB's journal, our boy Artie became ill yesterday and had emergency surgery very early this morning. A dried up hairball was blocking his intestine. They were really concerned about surgery because he has a history of congestive heart failure.

Thankfully, he came through it just fine and is resting quietly at the kitty hospital at a cost of about $8 million/day. We should be bringing him home tomorrow morning. I spent today reorganizing the bedroom so he can convalesce under my watch. The little kitty futon is made up and we'll set up food and litter tomorrow. He and I will be spending a good portion of the next week together as his incision heals and I relax from all the drama!

It is a gorgeous day! Gonna just sit back for a while and read. Maybe have a drink because my gut is suddenly much better than it has been for 2 weeks. I guess realizing that you have been consuming month-old expired pudding can be beneficial to your GI house.

Mrs CB is out watering her plants and has just announced, "The po-po is circling the block". Could be a fun afternoon :)
