Farewell, 2006!
Dec. 31st, 2006 12:44 pmA soft but steady rain is falling in Columbus on this last day of 2006. My dear Mrs. CB has discovered that not getting a flu shot this year was less than wise, and is currently curled up on the couch with Greyson, a temperature, and no voice. Add in my fatigue from being a lazy slob and we now have a delicious recipe for staying home tonight. So I am sorry to disappoint you all, but there will likely be no drunken dialing or embarrassing photos from this NYE celebration. Instead, I will make us a lovely dinner (steak, sautéed mushrooms, steamed asparagus, and risotto), we will relax and read/watch TV/snuggle with fur balls, and maybe, just maybe we will break out the Cordorniu Pinot Noir Cava champagne that was rec’d to us by the cute wine lady at the local Dykery.
As per usual, I have taken time to reflect on the year gone by, and I have to say that all-in-all, it was a good year at Casa Cabenson. Mrs. CB added to her resume by teaching an evening course at Capitol University while I left a much hated job for one that I pretty much enjoy, even if I find it much less mentally challenging.
Our home is in decent shape-the installation of the new furnace was completed yesterday and we only went 48 hours without heat. We were very lucky as the temps were unseasonably high and our interior heat only dropped to 56 degrees-made for a cold toilet seat, and I assure you, I have experienced worse. Ten years ago at this time, I was the one with the flu in a shit excuse of an apartment, 10” of snow outside and no damn heat. And except for a beloved bed-wetting cat named Blue, I was alone.
Other than Mrs. CB’s current viral infection, our health has been good. I have had a few issues with The Back, but have felt much better than I have in the last 6 years. The boys have been healthy (except for Greyson’s ass abscess and Artie being Sir Licks-a-lot) and they continue to love us as much as we love them.
Our families remain healthy, although we know that some are in failing health. We enjoyed most of their company over the holidays and I am resolving to spend more time with My Three Daddies in the upcoming year, especially Daddy #1. He has caught the computer photography bug and wants me to come up and show him how to do things. Mama CB, now happily retired at the ripe old age of 59, is relieved that Daddy #2 still has a job. She enjoys coming to see us and is hoping to come down again in Feb. Oh, and she wants me to go to NYC with her, my uncle, aunt and cousin next fall. If I can’t go, I’ll at least plan the trip for them. Daddy #3 still calls once a week, and I actually got a Christmas card from his son, Brother #2. This meant a lot to me as we all just met 6 years ago, and there’s been little communication between Bro and Sis#2 and I -they were a little shell-shocked to discover they had an older, much more attractive sister ;)
I was lucky enough to meet a couple of wonderful LJ buddies (and one librarian) in real life this year as well as several new friends in both cyberlife and and the real world. My best bud and I continue to "write" our show, and I have met some great people at my new job. I still miss some of my buddies from Teh Hell Lab, and we do try to keep in touch.
The State of Ohio, and the country as a whole, came to its senses this year and I am hoping that we will not be disappointed as the new Gov. and the new Congresses take over. The passing of Gerald Ford has taken me on a nostalgic trip back to my childhood and I have learned a great deal about this man during the last few days. To me, the most important act in his Presidency will always be his insistence on staying in Viet Nam long enough to get some of our allies out. In fall of 1975, my parish sponsored a family of refugees and a young boy, Phuong Ngyuen, was placed in my classroom. We all took turns helping him learn English-I can’t believe I remember his name some 30 years later. Anyway, his family’s presence in our lives symbolized the end of a war that, as children, we failed to fully comprehend. Obviously, certain members of that 1975 White house failed to learn as well-their arrogance and ignorance well on display these past 5 years as we have seen our country repeat the same mistakes. Thank you 2006 voters for saying, “NO More!”
I embraced a new ship this year, Sam Carter/Janet Fraiser from Stargate: SG-1, and I am currently immersing myself into an old fandom in order to write one last story for my original OTP. I have found my creative outlet in making music videos and with the help and generosity of
eclecticfan, I finally have a place to house all of my work. Not sure if I’ll add to my fandoms this year or concentrate on beefing up the three fandoms I currently enjoy. We’ll just have to wait and see.
My stomach is growling, so I need to stop and get some lunch.
Happy New Year to all of you- May 2007 bring you health and happiness!
