Question of the Day

Since so many people are doing "of the day" things, and I am a naturally curious person, I thought I would start a Question of The Day.

Today's question:

Do you know how to play any musical instruments? If so, please list them.

If not, what would you play if you could?

My answer: I know how to play flute, sousaphone, and a little sax, but it has been 20 years. I am learning the guitar and I have a wicked pair of drumsticks that I "airdrum" with

I can play trumpet- thanks to middle school and high school band.

My gf plays viola, and is quite good, though she rarely plays anymore.

My ex-gf plays guitar and is in a band, which I manage http://www.honeychuck.com

I have tried to learn guitar, but I suck suck suck at it. I can play "wipeout" and a few basic chords. I would really like to be better at it, but alas, I think I just don't have the coordination.

I play the flute and piccolo, I can pound out simple melodies on the piano but forget about the left hand. Also, my voice...which is certainly an instrument.

Oh, very cool question of the day.

I'm a professional drummer who also has a day job so I can put food on the table and have a roof over my head http://www.betsybanger.esmartmusic.com http://www.cspringmusic.com
I also play bongos, congas, timbales, claves, misc percussion instruments, some guitar, and I sing.

Airdrumming is tres chic!

i just wanted to say i love that icon! (i wish i could play violin and cello).

Thanks B. When I can sit at the computer a little longer, I'll make you a kitty icon.

Many instruments! My primary instrument is French Horn (though it's really just called a Horn, but no one knows that), have been playing since I was in 4th grade, stupid law school doesn't let me play much anymore, but soon, very soon, I plan to torture the neighbors with it. I also play the mellophone (cause you shouldn't march with a Horn), trumpet, piano, marimba/xylophone/other keyboards you hit with sticks. And I play a mean tin whistle.

Interactive 'of the day' - yay!!

So I thought I was the only person in the world who played viola (apparently not - just the only person in Australia that does). All through high-school I was going to be an orchestral musician, but I failed by entrance exam for uni, becuase I suck completely at perfroming alone.

Violin too, as it is what led me to viola (better career prospects), and I can do the cello part for Canon.

I played clarinet in band in HS as well. And recorder.

All of the saxophones (although the bari gets rough sounding), flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and recorder.

I can perform one marching band cadence thingy on the quads, I can play one song on the baritone and tuba, and I am also laughable on the xylophone(s) and bells. None of those instruments really counts. And I cannot sing to save my life. I lip sync at "Happy Birthday to You" at parties.

I played clarinet in school for two years, I can play 2 songs on the guitar (I have no ability to learn more, trust me), and I can play piano at the level of a six year old. :)

Sadly, I can't play an instrument. Teh Wife, however, bought me a ukulele to noodle around on, but I need to get it restrung.

What I would love to play? Look at the icon. :)

What? No air-guitar? I am disappointed. Really.

[identity profile] maroukian.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
i studied piano for 13 years,
and have the hands to prove it

[identity profile] maroukian.livejournal.com 2005-03-30 05:03 am (UTC)(link)

I had piano for about nine years. Not taking lessons anymore, but I occasionally play my old pieces.

I really, really wanted to play drums when I was younger but was naysayed by the Mom. *sigh*

[identity profile] betsybanger.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Its never to late to bang on the drums. Just Do It !!

[identity profile] celluloidson.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I played the euphonium and trombone for about eight years.

I've always wished I could play the guitar, just to be cool. And everytime I prepared to audition for a musical, I've wished I could play the piano.

[identity profile] annapie.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
oh what a nice question :) i think i'll need pictures. i started with the domra (http://teatrzvuka.fateback.com/domra.gif), which is a folk russian insturment, then i added piano, then violin (which wasn't a success though), then jaleika (http://teatrzvuka.fateback.com/zal_1.gif) which is another russian instrument, kind of a horn, and a reed-pipe (http://teatrzvuka.fateback.com/svirel_2.gif), and i know a couple of guitar accords. now i play in two youth and children's orchestras, and in the orchestra for the blind people (http://teatrzvuka.fateback.com) which is the best in the whole world. and here's pictorial proof (http://teatrzvuka.fateback.com/perpics.htm).

[identity profile] betsybanger.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Very cool! but why do the blind have a conductor? does he just act as a metronome, tapping out the beats?

[identity profile] annapie.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
well, not all are blind, it's kind of 50 blind/50 with good eyesight. besides an orchestra can't really be without a conductor can it.

[identity profile] betsybanger.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, even trains need conductors :-)

[identity profile] heathers.livejournal.com 2005-03-30 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
I can play cello and viola--they started me on violin when I was wee but alas, my hands were too clumsy for the delicate E string. XD

I think playing trombone would be wicked. Looks like serious fun, I say.

Trombone would kick ass, but I would probably nail people with the slide on purpose...cause I am that way ;)

[identity profile] lonejaguar.livejournal.com 2005-03-30 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Used to play the clarinet in grade school, but I highly doubt I could play it now.

My voice is really my only instrument.

[identity profile] slammerkinbabe.livejournal.com 2005-03-30 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I play piano. And sing. Oh, and I used to rock ass on the penny whistle, but I think that broke in half when my brother stomped on it when I was ten.

[identity profile] ava-cabot.livejournal.com 2005-03-30 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm...flute, piccolo, sax, and japanese bamboo flute. Too much woodwind for me.

[identity profile] bluepoet.livejournal.com 2005-03-30 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I played violin for 2 years in grade school, but I quit because it was hard for me to read music. More recenlty I took up piano for awhile, though I gave it up with my insanely-musically-talented brother took it up. I was fair at that point, though, with sight reading and playing from memory. My favorite piece to play was a Tori Amos piano suite--"Over It"--which is wicked cool. I'd play it over and over for hours when I was home alone! Now, I'm learning guitar, which is on a bit of a hiatus but should kick back into gear soon. I've always been good at air guitar and air drums, and I especially like to conduct with my headphones on, especially when doing the dishes.
