Unexpected Visitors
Jul. 11th, 2005 10:49 amThe kids are coming to visit next week. And by "kids" I mean my 13 and 14 yr old niece and nephew. They are traveling from North Carolina to Indiana with my BIL#1 (cause there are a few) and my folks will meet them halfway next Wed and keep them at their house for 2 weeks. I wish I could express how happy I am just knowing that they will here. I have another niece and nephew who won't be making the trip (different daddies)and while I love them I have never connected with them as I did the older ones. We have even discussed having my niece live with us (a VERY long story).
My mother, stepfather and I practically raised these two from birth to ages 5 and 6 while their parents served our country. My sister, never one to accept responsibility and always searching for an easy way out, took the kids to NC eight years ago under the guise of having them visit their father. She never came back. She left a job, the car my parents bought for her(which she eventually tried to steal when she DID come back), and a tiny kitten(who still lives with my mom) in the apartment my stepdad had helped her get. We didn't even know she was still in NC until the school called asking where my nephew was. It turned out that my sister had abandoned her first two kids and left them with their father and his go-go dancing girlfriend. The kids would be living in NC. We were crushed. We never got to say goodbye.
Over the years, we have managed to see the kids once a year or so. My chronic back trouble has made it difficult for me to drive down there, so I usually have to wait for them to come to me. We have maintained a good relationship with their father and step go-go mom and I have usually been able to take time off when they come to Ohio. Of course, I am still off for three weeks, so I'll get to see them, but I am travel-restricted and that will cut my time short. So, when Mom called to tell me they were coming, she also mentioned how she would like to bring the kids to Columbus to see the Titanic Exhibit at COSI. It looks like she'll be here with them Fri, July 21 until Sun July 23. Last time they stayed here in the summer, was 3 years ago. I haven't seen them since Christmas 2003.
The only thing that puts a damper on this trip is that we are awaiting results from some breast biopsies my mother had done on Friday. The mammogram was too similar to my aunt's who was diagnosed and treated 4 years ago. We are keeping our fingers crossed that Mom will not fall victim to her family's only legacy.
