Message from Cyndi Lauper
Jun. 14th, 2007 12:02 amWow! What a wonderful experience we had at the True Colors tour this evening. Wonderful music, cold margaritas, and powerful messages from the tour organizer, Cyndi Lauper. First, a brief recap:
1. The Cliks-really good. Mrs. CB was impressed enough that she bought their CD and then stood in line to get their autographs.
2. The Dresden Dolls-I LOVED them! Seriously, "Coin-Operated Boy" was amazing to watch as well as listen to. Punk caberet indeed!
3. Deborah Harry-She sang a song whose only lyrics were "Don't touch Me! Don't touch me!" and "You're too hot". Of course, this is my new mantra, or rather, my old one now set to music. While I really enjoyed hearing the mature Harry's rich voice, her lack of substansive lyrics and her technical issues? on stage detracted from her performance. I actually thought she was drunk or high when she first came on stage and couldn't sing the lyrics. A few technical adjustments later, and she was singing, but her set didn't have the energy the others did. She didn't appear onstage for the group performance at the end of the show either. Definitely the tour's weakest link.
4. Erasure was totally awesome dude! "Chains of Love" had the crowd on it's feet...after all, what can you do when words are broken? Very techno beat which gave Mrs. CB a headache, but I loved them! Flashback city.
5. Margaret Cho was a wonderful host for the event. She ripped on everyone from Falwell to Paris Hilton ("How about everytime Paris does something wrong, we punish Nicky. Paris gets a DUI, Nicky loses a finger.) She and another performer did a hilarious song where they compared their pussy to the crotchety bitch next door who had their new RV towed.
and finally,
6. Cyndi Lauper. I have a completely new respect for this woman. Not only is she passionate, and OMG! tireless with her music, she is really dedicated to empowering gay communities to make a difference. Aside from a stellar perfomance that had the security guard chasing after her as she climbed into the crowd, she asked us to pass along two important messages:
A. Erase Hate-don't hate those who hate our lifestyles, because hate=hate=hate. This doesn't mean you can't dislike haters and the reasons for their actions, but really, what does hatred provide for us aside from an excuse for our own behaviours. This is going to be a hard thing to attempt, because it's hard not to hate the people that treat you as less than human, less than a member of society because of who you love...but I'm gonna try.
B. Contact your state senators and reps to get your voice heard regarding the Matthew Shepard Act which would include crimes against people due to sexual orientation and gender identity under the Hate Crimes Act. HRC was at the concert and had postcards for us to fill out to contact our reps. Cyndi Lauper met Judy Shepherd at a Human Rights Campaign dinner and that's where she got the idea for this tour. Lauper also said that Bush hasn't got a clue and will veto the bill, so now is the time to make your voice heard.
I am not the activist type of person, but even I was moved to participate because of the speech Cyndi gave. To all my gay, lesbian, bi, transgendered, and especially my gay-friendly friends: Show your true colors during this Pride month, strive to erase hate, and make your presence known to those who think they are in charge...remind them they serve the people and we are the finest people they could hope to know.
