I still remember where I was when I learned of the Challenger Shuttle disaster (as well as the Columbia)- I was working in a restaurant and we had music playing. The newscaster broke in and the breakfast crowd silenced. The tears people shed so freely...the image is still so vividly etched in my mind.

Mrs. CB was a Teacher in Space candidate. so this really had an affect on her way back in the day. She hadn't been teaching long enough, but still...

I was born four months before Challenger, but learning about it changed and helped define my life. My elementary school science teacher was one of the finalists. In a way, I wish I could've been older at the time. I mean, my generation had their own shuttle disaster and...no one seemed to care. Kids these days.

My uncle was a Teacher in Space candidate, too. He actually met McAuliffe. I remember how excited he was when he sent in his application. It was so sad to see that all happen. I was home sick from school the day of the launch and I remember sitting in the kitchen with my Mom when they broke in with the news and showed the explosion.

I am from Orlando. I can remember being in elementary school (6th grade I think) and they had us all outside to see it because you can see the smoke from the launches. Very weird knowing I watched it unfold the way I did.
