$25 a pop Karaoke Special
Mar. 26th, 2005 04:40 pmLast night was the first time that Mrs. CB and I have been out since the Columbus Smoking Ban was enacted. And it was GREAT!! To wake up this morning and not a)reek of smoke and booze or b)have a sinus headache from all the smoke was a treasure.
We did have to wait in the rain for a little over an hour, but it was worth it. While I headed toward our sacred spot from last year (as fast as Sluggo could move me), Mrs. CB ventured upstairs and secured us SEATS!! with some friends.(It was basically standing room only with a few bar tables and box seas upstairs) We watched the show from the balcony which not only gave Mrs. CB a perfect view of her musical girlfriend, but allowed me to scope out the younger "talent" that danced around on the floor below. We had crappy cold pizza, stale nachos and weak Merlot, but at the time, it was the best meal evah!
The opening act, Magnapop, was extremely disappointing after hearing some cuts from their website. Why you ask? Because the lead singer, a Belinda Carlisle wannabe in both look and style, was drunk and/or otherwise inebriated. When you can't lead into the next song because you can't remember where you are, you have a substance abuse problem. Get help. Now! And dude! She either had fake nips or it was Reeeeeealy cold instage. I mean honestly, a drunken Barbie with no bra, bopping up and down onstage...that was the only thing that kept them from getting booed off. And every song started to sound like the one before. The only one that we could halfway make out the words to was the last song...and we were cheering because it was indeed, the last song.
When the Indigo Girls came on, all thoughts of mumbled songs and drunken blondes disappeared. They opened with "Yield" and the crowd went nuts. We were treated to an all acoustic performance, and I have to say, the musical abilities these women possess are unreal! Guitars, mandolin, lute, harmonica, piano...wonderful. And the crowd was so involved in the concert, that every song saw one of the singers pull back from the mike, listening as the crowd sang along. It was almost as if we had all paid for a $25 Karaoke Concert. It was really an incredible thing to watch, and listen to. I know we sang all of "Closer to Fine" while Emily and Amy stood on stage, smiling at us. They played for about 90 minutes and we got to hear two new songs, but don't ask me about them as I was hitting Teh Grape ;) They did a two song encore, ending the night with "Galileo" and the crowd sang along to "What's Going On?" as we left the Pavilion. We were home 20 minutes later...that is unheard of when going to a downtown concert. And that pace was packed with Teh Lezzies. We thought about going out to a local club, but let's face it. We are old.
Mrs CB was so happy with the entire evening and that was all that mattered to me.

Date: 2005-03-27 07:01 pm (UTC)Man, after SIXTEEN YEARS of doing the same schtick onstage, you'd think the Closer to Fine singalong would make them puke. Well, no one can say dykes aren't loyal and consistent. But you had fun, so that's all that matters. :)
