My Grey' Anatomy Season Five Theory
Feb. 16th, 2009 07:35 pm*** This has spoilers and potential spoilers for Season Five. You have been warned!***
My Grey’s Anatomy Season Five Theory
One of the main problems I have had with Season Five is that so many of the characters that were richly constructed last year are now represented as cartoonish caricatures. Relationships that seemed to finally be on track at the end of the season finale have derailed. Tightly woven friendships, once the core of this show, are unraveling episode by episode. I think there is a unique explanation for this other than Shonda Rhimes’s general asshattery.
If you are reading this, then you either know the reason, or are okay being spoiled, for Izzie Stevens’ “relationship” with her dead fiancé, Denny Duquette. According to Ausiello, Izzie is suffering not from a brain tumor, but an aneurysm-type of condition. When this condition flairs up, Izzie is not only able to see Dead Denny hanging around the house and hospital, but she is also able to bang his ass. How does this relate to the rest of Season Five’s idiocy? I think that the majority of the season has been scenes that we have seen from Izzie’s diseased POV.
At the end of the season premiere was a scene that set this theory in motion. Izzie arrives home and sees Alex making out with some other girl. We see a flash of light and suddenly Izzie is in her prom dress with Dead Denny and then she walks INTO THE LIGHT!!! I think that in the storyline “reality” Izzie actually collapsed and has been in a coma imagining herself and her colleagues this season, similar to how Dorothy imagined herself and the farm hands in Oz after sustaining a bump on the head. This season has been Izzie’s Coma Dream and Coma Izzie can change or control the other Grey’s Anatomy characters to fit her own needs.
Evidence:
Bailey- Izzie hero worships Bailey so we have seen several episodes where Bailey has succeeded on extreme cases (domino transplant, tumor girl and most recently, Jackson.) Bailey has begun to let her emotions override her personal judgment, just as Izzie did with Dead Denny and the LVAD. By portraying Bailey this way, Coma Izzie is able to be “more like Bailey” because Bailey is now more like Izzie. Bailey also knocked Hahn down a peg which makes her a hero in all of the residents’ eyes.
Meredith, Cristina and Sadie- Izzie hated their “love affair” and in her diseased state, she broke them up. She creates “Sadie” and uses this character to drive a wedge between Merideth and Cristina.
Cristina- Now that the residents can no longer “de facto specialize”, Yang can no longer be the Cardio rock star that she had been. In fact, Coma Izzie can set up Yang’s “downfall” by making her the responsible party for failing to report the Intern Fight Club. She punishes Cristina by awarding her the solo surgery, then yanking it away and giving it to her living boyfriend, Alex. Add in the departure of another Cardio god (Hahn, who took over for Burke) and Yang is left floundering without a mentor, which puts her on equal footing with the rest of the interns (except Meredith). Coma Izzie attempts to get an apartment with Yang only because it will once again put Callie on the outside of the Fab Five. Coma Izzie has Yang in a hot/cold “relationship” with Hunt because it makes Yang appear more human and less of a robot, yet keeps her from being truly happy. Coma Izzie seems a bit vindictive.
George- I think that Coma Izzie is so close to George that she just carries his little Hobbit self in her pocket which is why we never see him. I am speculating that as she begins to come out of “the dream coma”, George will emerge from her pocket and we will see him assisting on her case. Or not.***Edit. Or George fails his intern exam again and simply leaves the hospital.***
Merideth and Derek- Coma Izzie makes their long fought for relationship boring and banishes them to the corners of her mind. Then there is the Dream House. If this wasn’t Izzie’s coma dream, we would be hearing about that damn house every single episode.
Alex- All Izzie ever wanted was for Alex to be the perfect man, and finally, in her coma mind anyway, he is. He declared his love, stole cadavers from the interns so they could practice together, and didn’t seem to mind when she told him about Dead Denny. He has been nothing but supportive.
Callie- As a result of the George/Izzie fiasco, Izzie was seen a home wrecking whore in Callie’s eyes. What better way to get even than to make Callie the bad guy in her own unlikely romance with Dr. Erica Hahn. Coma Izzie imagines Callie as completely freaked out over falling for a girl, which is the opposite of what we were left with at the end of Season Four when Callie bravely kissed Hahn in front of the hospital. Coma Izzie wants Callie to fail, and puts Torres in her own shoes: she has Callie cheat on Erica, just like George cheated on her. Then she uses Hahn dumping Callie as the ultimate payback for how she was treated after she broke up the O’Malley marriage. Teasing Callie with Sadie’s affections and now Arizona’s is just Coma Izzie torturing Callie with blonde after blonde after blonde now that Callie has been dumped by the only blonde she truly wanted, Erica.
Erica- I think that deep down, Izzie has been worried from the day Hahn signed on that she would discover LVADgate. Coma Izzie casts a ridiculous version of a lovelorn Hahn because that is the only thing that can negate Hahn’s formidable professional demeanor. I personally never saw Hahn as being googly-eyed over Callie in Season Four. And Erica Hahn would never have sex in an on-call room, especially one that had an open window! Only when Coma Izzie is faced with Hahn’s attachment to Mike, the patient that was cheated out of the heart by Izzie, does Izzie realize that Hahn does have feelings. She then warps these feelings, not only to get back at Callie, but for self-preservation. Hahn threatened Seattle Grace and Izzie’s career, so having her leave is not only an act of self preservation on Coma Izzie’s part, but it also enables Coma Izzie to release the last vestiges of guilt she had over the whole LVAD scenario.
The Chief- Dr. Webber, once a patriarchal boss, demanding but fair, has turned into a raging ass. His intense focus on re-establishing SGH as a top-tiered teaching hospital and trauma center has blinded him to what is occurring, or not occurring in his domain. His flaws as an administrator (unable to replace the head of Cardio, won’t take suggestions from subordinates,) as well as his emotional outbursts (alternately blaming Merideth for his lack of focus on hospital business while succumbing to his personal guilt over mistakes with her mother, his reaction to colleague’s death) show that his professional decorum is losing out to his emotions, something he has counseled Izzie about on numerous occasions. And then there is his almost child-like behavior, such as when George was working on the robot. Way out of character.
Sloan- Izzie hated the way Sloan treated her and all of the other interns, so what better way to see revenge than to break his manbone.
Lexie- Lexie is the anti-Merideth. She is kind and sweet and just like her sister, she breaks man-parts. I think Coma Izzie hooked up Lexie and Sloan because Lexie is SO sweet and innocent (and young) that no one would think she could tame the manwhore.
All of the episodes after the two-hour season premier can be considered “Izzie’s Coma Dream” which will give the show runners a chance to do a series reset (when Izzie either awakens or dies) ala the Dallas shower scene. Because really, they need to. This season has been SO wrong. This theory will also allow for the return of Dr. Own Hunt as well as the introduction of Dr. Arizona Robbins (should both actors continue next season). Sadie, Dr. Dixon and the Intern Fight Club would have never existed. The only problem with this theory is that there would be no plausible explanation for the lack of Dr. Hahn. The only solution, of course, would be to beg, borrow and steal to get Brooke Smith back. You know I’m right about this.
Of course this is all just my warped, but humble opinion, and I know I didn't touch on everything, so feel free to add your thoughts in the comments.

or he's gone. Didn't he talk about changing hospitals last season? Maybe coma Izzy keeps him around but he does nothing because he's really gone. There have been rumors.

Let's hope your theory pans out. Even if Hahn is never coming back (which I think is the case - I really think McPherson and others have pea-sized brains and this is the result), erasing the disaster that was Callica-Season 5 would be very nice.
