Dear Fanfic writers:

I am trying to catch up on my fanfic reading but I have come across a problem that really affects all readers:

If you are writing a multi-chapter WIP and posting it WITHOUT links to previous chapters, I am sorry, but I'm gonna have to pass your piece by. I simply don't have the time to backtrack through weeks and months of posts to find the beginning of your story.

Thank you,

CB

I just want to second this comment. If I'm reading a WIP, I like to go back and re-read the previous chapter to refresh my memory about the story. If there are no links to those chapters, I don't read the update.

I appreciate all writers who post their works, but I don't have time to go searching for previous links either.

Thank you!

I've been good about that for the most part...hmm, I should go back and make sure I've done that w/every part of the story I've been writing. It is a good reminder, so thanks!

I just try changing the chapter or part number in the address box. it works sometimes.

And sometimes not. I just hate seeing what looks like a great fic being updated but I missed the first parts posted 8 mos ago or want to catch up on the plot.

Heh, preach it, sister! The really sad part is I've bailed on some pretty good WiP's because I fell behind in reading and didn't want to search for the chapters I've missed. And, honestly, it's not *that* hard to create links to previous posts.

No it isn't. Ralst even put a post on P&P LJ explaining how to do it.

I'm just a lazy old coot I guess ;)

I don't often have time to read works in progress, but if I spot a final chapter post, where the author's included links, I'll be far more inclined to read it. If there are no links, I have to give it a pass, because lj is useless at enabling you to find things.

I'm sure I've missed out on a lot of good stories and authors that way, but there aren't enough hours in the day to spend half of them searching for chapters.

Heh, which will *not* be read by the same people who join comm's without bothering to read the goddamned posting guidelines. If there's a fic I skip faster than a multi-chapter story without links to previous chapters, it's one where the author hasn't bothered to post their fic with the comm's guidelines! It just screams 'I'm not following this comm just using it as a place to post my fics'. I guess it really is that hard to look before you leap.

Um, in other words, if you're a lazy old coot then so am I!

I pretty much don't post anything anymore unless it's complete...and I rarely read multi-chapter pieces unless it's an author I really like and am reasonably sure will finish the story.
