My "SVU Tour of NYC"
Jun. 16th, 2004 06:57 pmLast week I went to NYC for the first time. Mere words cannot describe how I felt as I walked down Times Square, gazed at the Statue of Liberty, and paid my respects to those lost at Ground Zero.
I had several reasons for choosing NYC as my vacation choice for this year. I have felt a strong sensation pulling me to Ground Zero since the attacks. I felt an urgent need to visit the Statue of Liberty, to see it as something other than a target. I wanted to see a Broadway production ON BROADWAY and not in the local theater. But the real reason I chose NYC is to experience my LAW AND ORDER:SVU addiction up close and personal.
We flew in on Thursday, June 10, 2004 and stayed in Times Square. Our first night we ate at Bobby Flay's "Mesa Grill".
Now, because of my intense "devotion" to Stephanie March, I have always hated the old Asshat. After eating at the Mesa, I don't know which one of them to hate more...him for having my TV girlfriend as his real life girlfriend or her for having a guy that can cook like that.
I had a crusted steak, that melted when I cut into it, and twice baked potatoes with horseradish. My partner had grilled pork with sweet potatoe tamale and sauteed spinach. For dessert she had white chocolate ice cream sandwiches with a fresh cherry sauce while I had chocolate shortbread with a creamy chocolate mousse, candied bananas and passionfruit sorbet. It was a fantastic meal and my hate for him has diminshed, but only as far as his cooking goes. He's still an asshat. And I make better margaritas, too.
On Friday, we jumped on the Grey Lines Double-Decker tour bus and took the Uptown tour. We got off at St. John the Divine Cathedral and began our search for "The Underground"- the exterior site for the "Shooting of Alex Cabot" scene. I was wearing my TWoP "Chung Chung" shirt and watched as a black SUV drove by...but in the wrong direction.
We finished the tour, and came within a few blocks of "Alex's"
apartment (235 W. 78th, Apt C). We ate a quick meal and headed down to The Nederlander to see "RENT". We had third row orchestra seats and it was just amazing. Frenchie Davis of American Idol fame played the soloist in the ensemble and Melanie Brown (aka Scary Spice) played Mimi. It was a bit hard to get past the British performer playing a Latina character. The rest of the cast rocked and Mrs. CB became enamored with Merle Dandridge who played Joanne. I agreed that she could come live in our basement with Stephanie ;)
Saturday, we took the Downtown tour and saw Rockefeller Center Ice Rink (where Asshat did his proposing). It is covered with tables for a restaurant in the summer. I hope to see it with ice when we return later this year (did I mention how much I loved NYC? No?)
We walked around Battery Park, took the ferry around the harbor and then walked back up to Greenwich Village. We saw a medical examiner's van, the courthouses (both state and federal),and The Duane St subway entrance (DON'T GO IN THE SUBWAY, ALEX!. We actually saw a street called BENSON AVENUE, but I was out of film.
Saturday evening, we hit restaurant row and ate at the "Hourglass" I had wonderful pasta meal followed by chocolate mousse cake...the mousse part was shaped like a cat. I ate all of it, but left the kitty head on the plate. Yes, I was drinking (it was NY you know).
After dinner we took the night tour and cruised around Manhattan and Brooklyn as the neon started to glow. The view from Brooklyn of the Manhattan skyline, all lit up, was wonderful. The trip across the Manhattan Bridge on the top of the double-decker bus was not. Cabenson suffers from vertigo and it was very windy that night. The sky was so clear that we actually saw three stars. I think that's a record for Manhattan.
It was a wonderful trip and we are planning to return in November for our 5th anniversary. I highly recommend that EVERYONE experience NYC at least once in their lifetime. Broadway, great food, beautiful gothic structures and architecture and an astonishing amount of greenery. It was clean, kind and we felt safe...because we stayed out of the park after dark. And they film SVU there!!!
