Jan. 24th, 2008 02:38 pmWe just had to evacuate our building! In the snow and freezing cold. And there were fireman, shiny trucks, a street full of water, and no flushable toilets. It's been a great day!
ETA:
We had a water main break across the road last week and they had been bypassing the water to the hospital via a line that wasn't normally used. They swiched the water back to the now repaired-but for how long-main line, but needed to flush the "temporary" line out by opening the hydrant in front of our building.Which flooded the street. It's very cold! They also erroneously closed off the line to our area, and with the flushing of the other line, our water pressure dropped (no toilets!)The drop in H2O pressure set off the sensors in the sprinkler system which set off our alarms. We have no firedoors, so if the alarms go off, we are required to evac...so we did, but not before coming up with rescue scenarios involving the balcony outside our windows and having people catch us as we leapt. I grabbed my coat and Zune and backpack and was the first one out the door. Let the old people burn, I say!
We were only out there for about 15 minutes during which time my two co-workers decided to take a shuttle to the hospital to hit the johns. When they came back, we were back to business, so they asked what had happened. I told them the firemen had found a natural gas leak under one of their chairs-no more beans for lunch!!
So I am home, but as of 4:15pm , there was still no water pressure. I had one bottle of water and after pouring half in a cup, I put a "For Sale" sign on the rest and started the bidding at $50. Bidding on the empty bottle started at $10. I am a price-gouging profiteer.
