Fool Me Once...
Oct. 16th, 2004 08:19 pmToday was an interesting day. Mrs. CB and I had been invited to a surprise 50th birthday party for one of the teachers at the school where Mrs. CB works. The surprise, however, was on us!
The party was organized by Pam, the school nurse. It was an OSU (Ohio State) Buckeye football theme and we were asked to be at the restaurant early and to bring only gag gifts. Mike, the "honoree" is a business teacher and does the stats for the football team, so as expected, a lot of the coaching staff showed up. There was food, drink, bad-call bricks...a football lover/mocker of the elderly's dream. Then the honoree arrived.
As expected, he walked up the stairs and looked completely surprised. He was cheered and asked to make a speech, which I initially thought he was too surprised to make. And then he started talking. It would seem that he and Pam, the organizer of the party, had been dating (on the down-low) for a year. In fact, today was the anniversary of their very first date. He kept talking about how their relationship had grown into something serious and people began whispering "He's gonna give her a ring, you just watch!" Here comes the kicker. With his voice almost hoarse with emotion, Mike looked at Pam and then the crowd and said, "We are so thankful that all of you could be here, not to celebrate my birthday, but to celebrate our...WEDDING." Turns out they have been engaged for 4 months but were keeping it a secret. Well...that worked.
He called out to have Pam's two sons (Air Force pilots) and her nephew to come up and they were all wearing the same OSU shirt. Mike pulled off his sweatshirt to reveal an identical shirt as Pam headed to the back of the bar to put on her wedding veil. She was dressed in jeans, sneakers , an OSU shirt...and a wedding veil!! Her sons walked her down the "aisle" with a co-hort following playing an OSU fight song ring tone on her cell phone. A local judge and minister, attired in OSU wear had mingled undetected in the crowd and performed the ceremony together while the guests watched in amazement.
Not being a big fan of weddings in general, but a sucker for seeing two people so obviously in love, I had goose bumps. And let me just say, there is truly something to attending a wedding with a bottle of Bud Light in your hand. Following the ceremony, everyone ate and drank and shook their heads in disbelief as Mike opened all of the "over-the-Hill" gag gifts he had received. After all, how often is the surprise turned on the surprisers?
Too bad the Buckeyes got their asses handed to them...again.
