cabenson: (Question of the day)
[personal profile] cabenson
We had a wonderful discussion at work today about music from the 70's, so I thought I would pass the following question on to my flist:

What is your favorite 70's tune and why? Does it inspire feminist empowerment? Does it remind you of a specific socio-political event? Does it tempt you with the evils of sex, drugs, booze and...disco? Does it make you want to grow a 'fro?

Tell me, tell the world. And if you didn't grow up in the 70's come her so I can smack ya with my cane, what 70's tune is your favorite golden oldie?

The Jackson Five!

My favorite song in the '70's was actually "My Girl" but it was recorded by The Temptations in 1964. I walked around singing that song constantly. Still do.
So I guess I'll have to cop the remake by The Jackson Five with the addition of "I'll Be There"--done in the seventies. I even liked Mariah Carey's version of the latter.
Anything by the Jackson Five! They were the soundtrack to my early teens. "One Bad Apple" that Michael turned out to be.

Oh, interesting question...I was into the Monkees at that time, but technically they're the 60's.

Oh! I know! "It's Not Easy Being Green"!

I was born in 77, but I still love--

Amie- Pure Prairie League (my mom used to sing it to me)

Sweet Baby James, Carolina on My Mind, You've Got a Friend- James Taylor

I'm terribly sad to find that "It's Raining Men" was 1982.

But- Rock the Boat by Hues Corporation was 1974
How Deep Is Your Love and More than a Woman were late 70s.

I love the 70s.

Take It To The Limit - Eagles

I was only four when this song first came out, so I didn't grow to love it until a few years later. My mom loved the Eagles. We had all these eight tracks that we played at home and in the car. I can't really pinpoint an exact reason why I loved this song, but I sang it all the time back in the day and still get nostalgic when I hear it again.

Hmm...a specific song...there are too many to pick just one.

But pretty much anything by Queen, Pink Floyd, or The Who.

I remember hearing "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life" as sung by Barbra Streisand and thinking do people really feel like that about another person? At 14, I never imagined having those kind of feelings for anyone and yet when I heard those words and that music I knew that it definitely could be a possibility. Years later anytime I hear that song I feel that wonder. Funny how songs do that to you.

I was born in the last year of the 70's so please don't smack me! :(

My fave 70's songs are:

Puppy Love by Donny Osmond - Donny makes me all smushy, it's incredibly sad. I love him!

Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree by Tony Orlando and Dawn - I don't know why I love this song so much... I think because my mum used to play her 70's records when I was growing up..they just stuck with me.

Damn, this is one tough question. I could easily pick a tune for each question asked from inspiration of feminist empowerment to wanting to grow a 'fro. There were so many great tunes to pick from. I'm going to go with a Beatles tune for none of the reasons stated above. I just simply liked it... The Long and Winding Road.

Thanks for question; it brought back some wonderful memories. :)

Question of the day...some oldies but goodies

Being a '65 model I spent the better part of my childhood in the '70's so here goes: (in no particular order)

1. Van Morrison - Into the Mystic
2. John Denver - Poem, Prayers & Promises; Rocky Mountain High
3. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Helplessly Hoping; Teach Your Children
4. ABBA - SOS; Mamma Mia; Waterloo
5. Carole King - Will You Love Me Tomorrow; It's Too Late
6. Carly Simon - Anticipation; Legend In Your Own Time
7. James Taylor - ALL OF IT!

and last but not least, the one hit wonder band of the decade:

8. Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight!

70s music is so awesome. I could name off many that I like, but there's a few that when I hear them on the radio... I have to stop whatever I'm doing and listen:

-"Brandy" by Looking Glass

-"If You Could Read My Mind" and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot

If I could read your mind love,
what a tale your thoughts could tell.
Just like a paperback novel,
the kind the drugstore sells.

-"Drift Away" by Dobie Gray

Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul
I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away

We won't discuss what year I was born, but I would say my fave 70's song is Fire and Rain by James Taylor. I grew up listening to JT, and that song will be forever one of my favorites

That said, I also love me some disco.

Even though I was born at the very end of the decade, I have accumulated a boatload of '70s music. I have too many favorites to mention, but some of the top few probably are "Wild Horses" by the Rolling Stones, "Can't You See" by The Marshall Tucker Band, "Midnight Rider" by The Allman Brothers Band, "Boulder to Birmingham" by Emmylou Harris, "A Song For You" by Gram Parsons, "Take It Easy" by the Eagles, "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor.

70's fav song

Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain and Tenille always reminds me of going to the beach in the summer. Anything by Donna Summer generally reminds me of the 70's and watching my older siblings practicing the Hustle. Oh, and Gladys Knight and the Pips, only we called them Gladys Knight and the Pimps.

There's so much cheesy goodness in the 70s, I can't pick just one. Anything by ABBA would have to be at the top of the list, though.
